Spring Break Writing Workshops (online only)

• Intermediate Fiction Writing

In this one-week intensive workshop, we'll combine joint fiction reading with substantial critique of a completed story. In addition to preparing a short story for critique (3000 - 9000 words), you will be asked to read a few published short stories in the first few days of the workshop, so that we have a joint framework for dicussion/critique while workshopping. This class is appropriate for writers who have been writing for some time and are ready to start sending stories out (or who are already submitting pieces).

• Writing Speculative Fiction

This workshop will follow the same format as the regular fiction workshop, but will be geared towards speculative fiction. Speculative literature is a catch-all term meant to inclusively span the breadth of fantastic literature, encompassing literature ranging from hard science fiction to epic fantasy to ghost stories to horror to folk and fairy tales to slipstream to magical realism to modern myth-making -- and more. Any piece of literature containing a fabulist or speculative element would fall under our aegis. This class is also appropriate for writers who have been writing for some time and are ready to start sending stories out (or who are already submitting and/or publishing pieces).

Class Requirements

All workshops will meet online through a private mailing list. Each workshop is limited to 7 participants. Please be prepared to read and offer substantial critique for your classmates' stories during that week, as well as participating in discussion of the published material.

We'll also meet twice in an online chat session (joint with both workshops) where participants can ask questions and exchange advice; attendance for the chats is optional, but is strongly recommended for the full workshop experience. As time permits, we'll also address the business of writing in the chat sessions-- submitting stories and novels, finding an agent, etc. Chat sessions will be held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 5 - 7 p.m. PST.

Each one-week class: $50 ($75 if you wish to take both classes (you may submit one story to each class)).
