Backyard

It's such a different world. Here's a friend's backyard, with coconut palms and lush undergrowth. I can't imagine living somewhere with king coconuts ready to pick behind the house. I remember visiting my grandmother's house and having fresh mango with every meal, and milk from the cow, and grapes from the vines. Her vineyard was a wonderfully cool place to spend time during the day, and if the heat got unbearable, we went swimming in a large concrete pool set aboveground, so that you climbed a set of steps to reach it. My mother's mother was luckier in that respect -- she lived almost on the beach, so it was just a short walk to the ocean. Oddly enough, hardly anyone swam there, though they would wade in. Respect for the undertows? I hear it's common that islanders not actually know how to swim, which I find strange.

This photo of my friend's well is perhaps my favorite of all of these. It seems so peaceful, and reminds me of all the fairy tales where the young woman goes to draw water from the well, and she meets a stranger there, and her life is forever changed.

Well
